How Build the Ninth Chords
Ninth (9) chords are built with the notes of a 7th chord but adding a ninth note, which would be the second note but an octave higher. For example, to get a D9 chord, we must add an E note to a D7 chord.
Key of D Major
We can see in the image below an open D9 chord, followed by a D9 chord with a suspended fourth. A very used chord, which sounds very good, and is placed only by dragging two frets towards the body of the guitar, the position of the open chord of C Major.
Ninth Chords: D9
D Ninth Chord Consists of five Notes: 1 D – 3 F# – 5 A – 7b C – 9 E
D9 Guitar Chord
In the previous image, we see the position to put ninth chords all over the fretboard. In this position, the note on the fifth string would be the one on which the chord is based.
We can see in the image below, the same position but on the third fret. Therefore, we would obtain a C9 chord.

We have the option of another second position to use anywhere on the fingerboard. Exactly the same as that of C9 (above) but placed from the fourth string. But this chord would be based on the note plucked on the first string.

Minor Ninth Chords (m9)
Minor 9th chords (m9) are built with the notes of a minor 7th chord but adding a 9th note.
